= movie / film
Eiga is movie — the art form that transformed Japan into a global cultural power, from Kurosawa to anime, each frame a window into how Japanese people see themselves.
Eiga (映画, movie / film) is a recorded visual narrative, typically theatrical or streamed. The word combines ei (reflect/project) and ga (picture/image), etymologically “projected image.” Eiga is the standard word for both cinema and film studies. The distinction between eiga (film as art) and dorama (TV drama) exists, but eiga carries more prestige as a medium. Japanese cinema spans from classical samurai films to anime movies, each format falling under eiga.
Eiga covers all cinema. Eiga wo miru (watch a movie) is the standard phrase. Eiga kan (movie theater) is where you watch eiga. Unlike English where “movie” can be casual and “film” formal, eiga is neutral — both blockbusters and art films are eiga. Anime eiga (anime movie) is now a major industry in Japan, breaking box office records worldwide.

Japanese cinema is a global cultural force. Directors like Kurosawa Akira established Japanese film as an art form respected worldwide. More recently, anime films have become massive internationally — Spirited Away, Your Name, and Jujutsu Kaisen have influenced global popular culture. Eiga is a point of cultural pride.
The movie theater (eiga kan) is a social ritual in Japan — watching eiga is a date activity, a school outing, and a leisure pursuit. The quiet reverence with which Japanese audiences watch film contrasts with noisier Western theaters, reflecting broader cultural differences in public behavior and concentration.
