About NihongoWords
Welcome to NihongoWords.com — the Japanese dictionary built for English speakers who want to go beyond definitions and truly understand the language.
Our Mission
Japanese is one of the world’s most fascinating languages — rich with cultural nuance, beautiful kanji, and concepts that simply don’t exist in English. Yet most Japanese learning resources give you a definition and move on.
We believe that every word has a story. At NihongoWords, every entry comes with:
- Full meaning and nuance — not just a translation, but how the word actually feels
- Kanji breakdown — the visual logic behind each character
- Real example sentences — Japanese, romaji, and natural English
- Cultural context — how and when the word is actually used in Japan
- Usage tips — common learner mistakes and how to avoid them
- Related words — to build vocabulary naturally
Who’s Behind NihongoWords
NihongoWords is produced by a small, independent editorial team of Japanese-language learners and enthusiasts who got tired of dictionaries that stop at a one-line gloss. We are not a large publisher — we are people who love the language and want to explain it the way we wish it had been explained to us.
Every entry is written and reviewed in-house by the NihongoWords Editorial Team. When a word touches on grammar, regional usage, or cultural background we are unsure about, we check it against established dictionaries, reference works, and native-speaker usage before we publish it.
Our Editorial Standards
We hold every entry on this site to the same standards:
- Written individually, one word at a time. Each entry is researched and written from scratch for that specific word. We do not mass-generate pages from a template or fill in blanks — if a word doesn’t have something genuinely useful to say, we don’t publish it.
- Meaning checked against real usage. Definitions and nuances are cross-referenced with dictionaries and how the word is actually used by Japanese speakers today, including differences between casual and formal registers.
- Examples from real situations. Our example sentences are set in concrete contexts — shopping, social media, the workplace, conversations with friends — so you can see where a word actually belongs.
- Culture explained, not copied. When we describe how a word appears in anime, manga, or pop culture, we explain the context in our own words. We do not reproduce copyrighted dialogue or lyrics.
- Corrected when we’re wrong. Language is alive and we are human. If you spot a mistake, tell us — we review and fix reported errors.
