さすが is the word you say when someone lives up to their reputation, half compliment and half I knew it, recognizing that of course they pulled it off, because that is exactly who they are.
さすが expresses admiration that something turned out as well as expected from a person or thing already held in high regard. Said alone or as さすが〜だね, it praises by confirming a reputation: of course you could do it. It has a second, contrastive use, often さすがに, meaning even so or as might be expected, to concede a point. The praising sense is by far the most common in casual speech.
Use さすが to praise someone whose skill or status you already acknowledge; said to a stranger with no track record it can sound odd. The form さすがに shifts the meaning toward even… or admittedly (as in さすがに疲れた, I’m admittedly worn out), so do not confuse the praising さすが with this concessive one. A warm さすが! on its own is a natural, friendly compliment.
さすが is usually written in hiragana, though it has a rare kanji form 流石. That spelling is ateji, kanji chosen for sound rather than meaning, and traces to a Chinese anecdote, so 流 (flow) and 石 (stone) do not literally explain the word. In practice you will almost always see and write it as さすが.
