Keeki (ケーキ) is the Japanese word for cake — borrowed directly from English and pronounced with characteristic Japanese vowel lengthening. In Japan, keeki is central to a celebrated Christmas tradition and an enormously sophisticated patisserie culture.
Keeki (ケーキ) refers to cake in the Western sense — a baked confection of flour, eggs, sugar, and fat, decorated and served at celebrations. Japan uses the loanword for Western-style cakes, while traditional Japanese sweets have their own vocabulary (wagashi, 和菓子). The most popular keeki in Japan are shooto keeki (ショートケーキ, Japanese-style strawberry shortcake — a sponge cake layered with fresh cream and strawberries) and chokoreeto keeki (チョコレートケーキ, chocolate cake). Hooru keeki (ホールケーキ, a whole round cake) is the type exchanged at celebrations, while katsu keeki (カットケーキ, a slice of cake) is sold individually at cake shops (keeki-ya, ケーキ屋). The verb phrase keeki wo kiru (ケーキを切る, to cut the cake) is used at birthday and wedding ceremonies, and keeki ni rousoku wo tateru (ケーキにろうそくを立てる, to put candles on the cake) is standard for birthdays.
Japanese pronunciation of keeki follows the long vowel rule: the first syllable is kee (ケー — the long ‘e’ sound, written with the length mark ー in katakana). This is different from the short English ‘cake’ vowel. Listen carefully to native speakers: the elongated vowel in keeki is essential — saying a short keki without the length mark sounds unnatural. The most common compound to know is baasudee keeki (バースデーケーキ, birthday cake) and kurisumasu keeki (クリスマスケーキ, Christmas cake).
