doryoku
= effort / hard work / endeavor
Doryoku (努力) represents effort and hard work—a core value in Japanese culture. It’s not just about labor but the perseverance and determination to achieve goals despite obstacles.
Doryoku means effort, hard work, or endeavor. Doryoku suru means ‘to try hard’ or ‘to make an effort.’ The word emphasizes the process and dedication rather than the outcome. In Japanese culture, doryoku is celebrated regardless of success—effort itself has value. This reflects the cultural belief that dedication and persistence are virtues. Doryoku shita (tried hard) is considered a valid achievement even if the goal wasn’t reached.
Doryoku is formal and sincere—use it when discussing genuine effort. Don’t use doryoku sarcastically. Also note that doryoku focuses on the effort itself, not the result. This nuance is important in Japanese communication where effort is valued as much as success.
努 (do) means exert or strive, while 力 (ryoku) means power or strength. Together they create the image of exerting strength toward a goal.

Formal / Cultural context
困難な状況でも、努力することが重要である。
Konnan na joukyo demo, doryoku suru koto ga juuyou de aru.
Even in difficult situations, making an effort is important.
Doryoku is foundational to Japanese culture and education. Schools emphasize doryoku as a moral virtue. The concept appears in anime and manga constantly—characters who ‘never give up’ and ‘keep trying’ embody the doryoku spirit. This reflects societal values where determination matters as much as talent.
In Japanese business culture, doryoku is expected and respected. Working long hours and showing dedication are seen as moral goods. This cultural emphasis on effort shapes Japanese attitudes toward achievement and failure—failure is acceptable if doryoku was demonstrated.
