幸せ is happiness in its warmest, fullest sense, not a passing good mood but the deep, settled feeling of a life or a moment that is truly blessed.
幸せ means happiness or good fortune, and the contented state of being happy. As a な-adjective, 幸せな人 is a happy person and 幸せです means I’m happy. It tends to describe a profound, lasting well-being, the happiness of family, love, or a fulfilling life, rather than momentary fun, for which words like 楽しい (enjoyable) fit better. It carries a sense of being fortunate as well as glad.
Distinguish 幸せ from 楽しい: 楽しい is fun or enjoyable in the moment, while 幸せ is deeper contentment, so a party is 楽しい but a loving home life is 幸せ. As a な-adjective, the negative is 幸せじゃない. The phrase 幸せになる (to become happy) is a common, heartfelt wish, famously said to couples at weddings.
幸 means happiness, fortune, or blessing on its own, and appears in words like 幸福 (koufuku, happiness) and 不幸 (fukou, misfortune). In 幸せ it takes the reading しあわ, joined by the okurigana せ. The word historically relates to 仕合わせ, the way circumstances come together, hinting that happiness is partly about how fortune aligns.
