senpai
= senior / mentor / person with more experience
Senpai (先輩) refers to a senior or someone with more experience—in school, at work, or within any organized group—who has authority and wisdom to share with juniors.
In Japanese hierarchy, senpai-kohai (senior-junior) relationships structure social dynamics. A senpai is someone ahead in the same pathway: an older student, a veteran employee, or an experienced practitioner. The relationship carries respect, mentorship potential, and often mutual obligation. Senpai might offer guidance; kohai shows gratitude and deference.
Senpai is respectful but not formal. Students directly address senpai by name + ‘-senpai.’ In anime, schoolgirl crushes on older senpai (often unexplained) is a popular trope. The term appears as ‘-senpai’ suffix. Avoid using it for yourself; others grant you the title as you gain experience.
先 (sen, before/ahead) + 輩 (hai, group/companion) = senpai. Someone who came before you in the group.
