ラジオ
rajio
= radio
ラジオ (rajio) is Japanese for radio — and while radio as a medium has declined in much of the world, in Japan it holds a unique cultural position: it is the preferred medium for anime voice actors connecting with fans, and ラジオ体操 (rajio taisou — radio calisthenics) remains one of the most iconic sounds of Japanese summer mornings.
Rajio refers to both the radio device and radio as a broadcast medium. Common phrases: ラジオを聴く (rajio wo kiku — to listen to the radio), ラジオ番組 (rajio bangumi — radio program), ラジオ体操 (rajio taisou — radio calisthenics, broadcast every morning), カーラジオ (kaa rajio — car radio), インターネットラジオ (intaanetto rajio — internet radio/web radio). The verb ラジオをつける (rajio wo tsukeru — to turn on the radio) and ラジオを切る (rajio wo kiru — to turn off the radio) are the standard on/off expressions.
In Japanese fandom culture, ラジオ or ウェブラジオ (webu rajio — web radio) refers to audio content produced by anime production studios and voice actors — typically a weekly show where two seiyuu (voice actors) read listener mail, play games, and discuss the anime they are working on. These programs, called 声優ラジオ (seiyuu rajio — voice actor radio), are a major channel through which fans connect with the people behind anime characters.
ラジオ is a katakana loanword from English ‘radio.’ There is no kanji form.

Formal / Cultural context
民間ラジオ放送は、デジタルメディアの台頭により聴取者数の減少が続くなか、ポッドキャストとの連携やインターネット配信への移行によって新たな受信者層の開拓を図っている。

Commercial radio broadcasting, amid declining listenership due to the rise of digital media, is seeking to cultivate new audiences through collaboration with podcasts and migration to internet streaming.
ラジオ体操 (rajio taisou — radio calisthenics) is one of Japan’s most distinctively communal institutions. Broadcast every morning on NHK Radio since 1928, the five-and-a-half-minute calisthenics program is ingrained in Japanese collective memory. During summer school holidays (夏休み, natsuyasumi), elementary school children gather at neighborhood parks at 6:30 AM to do rajio taisou together, receiving stamps on a card for attendance. The distinctive piano melody and count-along instructions are immediately recognizable to every Japanese person regardless of generation.
The anime voice actor radio (声優ラジオ) tradition is a uniquely Japanese media form that has survived and expanded into the internet era. Major anime productions almost always produce an accompanying web radio program, and these shows become an important part of how fans engage with a series beyond the broadcast. Voice actors reading fan mail aloud, reacting to listener messages, and playing challenge games creates a parasocial intimacy between fans and the people behind their favorite characters that supplements the anime experience. Many seiyuu have built dedicated followings through their radio programs that transcend any single series.
