メンバー means a person who belongs to a group, team, or organization. While the English origin is clear, the word carries a stronger association with performance and fan culture in Japanese. It is used to describe the individual members of idol groups, bands, and sports rosters far more frequently than its English counterpart. In formal settings it can also appear in workplace or committee contexts to mean attendees or participants. The word is neutral in register and works in both casual speech and written announcements.
Learners sometimes confuse メンバー with 会員 (kaiin), which specifically refers to paid or registered membership in a club or service. メンバー is more about belonging to a group as a participant or performer, not about dues or formal enrollment. The compound 推しメン (oshi-men), short for 推しメンバー, is widely used by fans to mean their favorite member of an idol group — a useful collocation to recognize even if you are not a fan yourself.
