大学 (daigaku) means university or college — the destination of Japan’s notoriously competitive 大学受験 (daigaku juken — university entrance exam) process, where the name of the university a person attended can carry lifelong significance for their career and social standing.
Daigaku refers to a four-year (or more) higher education institution equivalent to a Western university or college. Common phrases: 大学に入る (daigaku ni hairu — to enter university), 大学を卒業する (daigaku wo sotsugyou suru — to graduate from university), 大学院 (daigakuin — graduate school), 大学生 (daigaku-sei — university student). Related institutions: 短期大学 (tanki daigaku / tandai — junior college, 2-year), 専門学校 (senmon gakkou — vocational school, distinct from daigaku).
Japan has a clear university hierarchy that affects graduate employment. 東京大学 (Toudai — University of Tokyo) sits at the top, followed by other 旧帝大 (kyuu teikoku daigaku — former imperial universities): Kyoto, Osaka, Tohoku, Nagoya, Kyushu, Hokkaido.
